Dak Bungalow in Shimla

Dak Bungalows

From the foothills of the Himalayas to the forests of South India, you can still find ‘Dak Bangalows’ across India. These rest houses were used by British officials posted in remote parts of the country in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The word ‘Dak’, meaning post, indicates that these lodgings were first made by the British as stopovers for the postmen of the Imperial mail service.
