Sir Winston Churchill smoked a type of cigar called the Trichinopoly Cheroot. ‘Cheroot’ is a hand rolled, filterless cigar. It comes from the Tamil word ‘suruṭṭu’ which literally means ‘to roll’. The town of Trichy in Tamil Nadu was famous for its hand-rolled suruttus, which, by the end of 19th century, started being made in factories as Trichinopoly Cheroots.
