Gauri Kund

Drive northwards back to the Vadnagar ring road and drive eastwards to reach Gauri Kund, about 2.5 Km from Bhurodia lake.

In the course of this tour, we have already visited multiple spots associated with water management in Vadnagar. We’ve seen a lake, a well, and a stepwell. This is another kind of a water space - a Kund or a water tank.

Unlike lakes or stepwells, a Kund is a smaller, often geometric water tank, usually built beside a temple. There are steps that descend from all sides, creating a space that feels both intimate and sacred.

This Kund is associated with Gauri, another name for Parvati. While the present structure was probably built in the 18th century, legends say that this water body is much older. A king named Ajpal is believed to have been cured of leprosy after bathing here. So Gauri Kund is also known locally as Ajpal Kund.

Here at Gauri Kund, water takes on a deeply spiritual role. In many traditions, water is seen as a bridge between the world of the living and the world of those who have passed on. Water is the medium that carries offerings to the ancestors. For generations, people have come here to perform funerary rites and ceremonies that honour their forefathers.
